Lake Powell, How I Love Thee

October 1, 2006 – 8:38 pm Brian mentioned that I’m lacking choices when I say that Lake Powell is my favorite place in the world. If Brian can find a lake with the following attributes—that Lake Powell has, mind you—I will humbly reconsider.Lake Powell…
  • Is the 2nd largest man-made lake in the United States
  • Is 186 miles long
  • Has over 90 major canyons
  • Has almost 2000 miles of shoreline (more than the entire west coast of the United States!)
  • Has had over 32 movies filmed there including Greatest Story Ever Told and Planet of the Apes (old and new)
  • Has a water depth of over 500 feet at Glen Canyon Dam at Full Pool
  • First reached Full Pool in 1980—the year that I was born

  2. Hi Dustin,

First let me thank you for digging up those very interesting facts on Lake Powell! I will definitely have to spend some extended time there in the near future. In response to your friendly challenge, let me first say that bigger is not always better. Though, I could bring Lake Superior into this if that was the only criteria but you did mention other interesting criteria such as surrounding geography and cultural history so I do not thnk that was your only point. So with no further adeiu, in this corner wearing the multi-national colors of the US and Canada is Rainy Lake (http://www.rainylake.org/)! (*cheers, shouts, awwws*), weighing in at 932 sq. km, 2520km of shoreline, max depth of 50m. Here are some of it’s best attributes:
    - ~1600 islands (I camped on 2 of them about 30 miles out on the lake, now that is remote. The stars out there were blindingly bright!)
    - Gateway to Voyagers National Park (http://www.nps.gov/voya/)
    - Connects to many tributary rivers and lakes, enabling even more remote and varied fishing, hiking, and camping
    - Arguably the best freshwater fishing in the World, many world championship tournaments are held there (e.g. Canadian Bass Championships)
    - 0 major movies filmed there (I consider that a plus ;) )

  3. Although Rainy Lake isn’t as big, nor as deep, it is very beautiful. And it’s interesting that it has so many islands.

To this place I should go (good relations with the Wookies I haveâ€ for all you Star Wars fans)
